Human culture has produced countless examples of non-physical environments throughout its history in books, poems, visual arts, video games. When immersive technologies hit the consumer market at the end of last decade, we added one more medium to the list: virtual reality. And short of brick and mortar, this is our favorite so far. It’s real, designed, three dimensional, built. Not with physical materials but with digital objects and digital tools. You can stroll through virtual landscapes and pick up flowers, slay some zombies, dive into your memories or go on a journey of self-discovery.

If we were to embrace virtual reality for what it is, we would have no avatars but expressions of human presence, no gravity but forces, no ground plane but local orientations, no objects but forms.
